An incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman Colchester-derivative brooch. The flat-headed bow is sub-triangular in plan and crescentic in section, with a hollow back; it is 11 mm wide at its head, tapering to 5.5 mm at its broken end before it extends to the foot. The head is decorated by a transverse groove 3.5 mm from the edge of the hinge cavity between the two wings. The wings are 6 mm in diameter and are strengthened by a central iron rod which is visible at the two broken ends where both terminals are missing. The more complete wing is decorated with three pairs of parallel, incised transverse grooves which would have originally been around the circumference of the wing but are now worn away; only one pair is visible on the more damaged wing. The bow is decorated with a broad moulding that is 10 mm wide at the head and tapers to 6 mm wide at the broken edge and is defined by a grooved border on either side which follows the edge of the bow. The remains of the iron hinge and beneath it a fragment of the pin survive in the hollow back of the bow, but the rest of the pin, catchplate and foot are all missing.

Bayley and Butcher (2004) illustrate a similar Colchester-derivative brooch, with a flattened head and central raised moulding on the bow and incised wings on page 158, fig.127, no.T94B, which is dated from the 1st century AD.

Butcher (2016) illustrates a Colchester-derivative brooch with similarly incised wings and a flattened and grooved head from Nornour, Isles of Scilly on page 5, fig.4, no.50, dating from the 1st century AD. A similar incomplete Colchester-derivative brooch from Maker-with-Rame, Cornwall is recorded in CORN-6F9D68.
