Richard I penny probably class 4a with a single crescent either side dating 1194-1200. Obverse has the face head of the king facing with the legend h[ENR]ICVS R/EX.. The reverse is a voided short cross with the legend TVR[K]IL.ON.[EVER].
Diameter: 17.61mm; weight: 1.3g
Notes:
Carl Savage notes that coins of class 4a normally have a couple of non-parallel curls but there is a small sub-group within 4a that has single curls like this example and it is not fully understood. There is also a colon stop before the moneyers name and there appears to be no initial cross on the rev. The moneyer is Turkil? and the mint is possibly York. As Turkil only minted class 4a coins the coin can be assigned to class 4a rather than 4b.
