A complete cast copper-alloy rotary key dating to the Medieval period, c. 1150-1400. It demonstrates a circular bow with a large central aperture for suspension. The shank is oval in section and hollow, the bit rectangular in plan with a single small cleft taken out of each side. Preserved in good condition with an even greenish patina, it measures 33.88mm in length, 13.49mm in diameter at the bow, and 5.05mm thick at the midpoint of the shank. It weighs 5.27g. A practically identical key has been recorded on the PAS database as NLM-742398. The small size of these examples suggests that they were utilised on caskets.
