A fragment of an Early Medieval, copper alloy strap end of Thomas class E, type 3, dating from AD 850 - 1100. The remaining portion consists of the attachment end. The upper surface is decorated with a central ridge with a deep groove along it at the closed end only, and similar motifs around the original edges where they survive. The metal to either side of the median rib is decorated with punched ring and dot motifs. On the reverse, the attachment end is stepped thinner and two circular, copper alloy fastening rivets remain in place. The integral back plate that would have formed the other piece of the split end is missing. The strap end has a light grey green patina. It is 26.4mm long, 21mm wide and 3.5mm thick. It weighs 4.65gm.

A strap end of this type is illustrated in Finds Research Group datasheet 33, Late Anglo-Saxon and Viking Age Strap Ends, 750 -1100: Part 2, page 3, number 28. A more complete version of this strap end can also be found on the database at reference YORYM-D98B74.
