A lead spindle whorl of Early Medieval to post-Medieval date. It appears to be Walton Rogers Form A1, suggesting a date of about AD 500 - 850 (owing to the fairly small central aperture). However, traces of cast decoration on the curved face may suggest a later date, up to AD 1600. One face is flat and one is convex. There is a central perforation which has a maximum diameter of 8mm. Traces of a design in relief are visible on the convex face. The artefact has a light cream patina. It is 26.1mm diameter, 10.3mm thick and 28.4g. Walton Rogers (in the Flixborough volume and York Fasicules) cites Ivens et al (1995) that decorated whorls are Post Medieval, though those of Form A1 are usually though to date from AD 500 - 1000.
