BOW BROOCH

Unique ID: SF-93F926

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete cast copper-alloy bow brooch of probable late Iron Age to early Roman date, c. AD 1-60. The pin and most of the catchplate are missing in old breaks, but otherwise the object is preserved intact. The head demonstrates extremely stubby wings, from the rear of which project a double pin-lug with separate axis bar, from which the pin would originally have hinged. The bow is 'D' shaped in section and tapers towards its plain foot, its outer surface demonstrating a single median longitudinal moulding flanked by two thinner mouldings on the edge of the brooch. The catchplate is mostly broken away, leaving its original full form uncertain. Preserved in good condition with a patchy brownish green patina, it measures 72.72mm in length, 13.59mm wide at its head, and c. 1.91mm thick at the midpoint of the bow. It weighs 8.22g.

This brooch belongs to a group loosely collected by Mackreth (2011), 'oddments; a collection of items with hinged pins which ought to have been produced in pre-Roman times or to have derived from items which should belong wholly there.' Only one similar example could be found on the PAS, see record NMS-135D37.
