Medieval lead alloy ampulla, 48mm long, 38mm wide and 13mm thick with a weight of 64.97g.
The ampulla is 'bag shaped' with a sub rectangular form and rectangular cross section. It has a flat rectangular upper section which has a sub triangular suspension loop attached at each edge. Below this the object is sub -circular in form. It is decorated on one side with a raised double armed cross. The corresponding side is covered in rows of incised chevrons.
The double-barred cross is sometimes known as a cross of Lorraine, or a patriarchal cross. It appears to be Byzantine in inspiration and has been associated with the Knights Templar, and with relics such as the Holy Rood of Bromholm, which was brought from Constantinople to Norfolk in the early 13th century.
