An incomplete copper-alloy pin of Early-Medieval date, c.AD 700 - 900. The pinhead is rectangular in both plan and section, moulded in a possibly zoomorphic design of a forward facing beast head. A single annulet is present on each face of the head and a triangular recess extending from the outer edge to just before the annulet on one side gives the impression of an eye and mouth.
Each corner of the head of the pin has a small triangular cut out just below the edge resulting in a baluster-style effect.
From the base of the head a circular sectioned shaft extends, bending slightly before tapering to a worn break.
The metal has a mid-green patina and is worn. The pin is 49.1mm long, the head is 2.7mm x 2.11mm wide, the shaft is 2.2mm in diameter and weighs 1.4g.
