Copper alloy dome thimble, 13.7mm in length, with round indentations which run in a spiral around the sides. There is an undecorated tonsure 7.3mm wide, which has a small pierced hole in the centre. There is a simple moulded linear border around the open end. The thimble is crushed and distorted.
Notes:
The thimble is probably medieval in date (AD 1330 - 1400) due to it being short, the spiral decoration stopping at the tonsure and the pierced hole in the centre of the tonsure (Egan 1998, 265-266: Holmes 1988). The thimble is relatively light in weight and this indicates that it was used for light duty sewing (Egan 1998, 265). Similar to SOM-368592 and SOM-08C486.
