CLOTH SEAL

Unique ID: CORN-5CD7DD

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Cast lead Russian oval hemp seal with two sub-rectangular slots opposite each other on each side of the seal, which would have allowed the sealing cord to pass through the seal and attach it to the bale of cloth.

Obverse: ПД / ...СЕДОВЪ / H311

Reverse: SPB / ISRH / 1808

The ПД translates to PD and refers to the inspected hemp. The Hemp Inspector is ...SEDOV working out of 311 post in the port of St Petersburg, Kronstadt, Narva, Riga, Libau, Pilau, Pernau, Revel Memel, Konigsberg, or Tilsit in 1808. All St Petersburg (SPB) seals before 1829 are hemp seals. The Grower/Owner/Agent initials are I.S. with high quality Rein Hemp (RH) plants in the bale (Ged Dodd pers comm).

See reference IDS 1425 on http://www.peacehavens.co.uk/INDENT1400.htm

These types of seal were used as a means to monitor and ensure the quality of products such as flax hemp from Russia (Sullivan, J. 2000 'Lead Seals of Russian Origin in Fife' Tayside and Fife Archaeological Journal, Volume 6, pp.211-227).
