A complete lead-alloy weight of uncertain date. The object is conical with a flat base and top and an off centre perforation running through it. All surfaces appear undecorated.
The metal has a mid-brown patina and is worn. The object is 13mm tall, 11.3mm to 9mm in diameter, and weighs 8.1g. The perforation is 1.5mm in diameter.
The term 'weight' is used here in its broadest sense to include uses that do not involve weighing (e.g. holding-down, tensioning, etc.). They were commonly used from the Iron Age through to the post-medieval period and are difficult to date with any certainty without supporting archaeological context. The function of such objects is also difficult to determine. The dating of lead objects of this general type is problematic, and their use is invariably uncertain. It should however be noted that this object is from a site which is producing predominantly Roman material. As such a similar date for this object is possible though not definite.
