A complete cast copper-alloy strap fitting dating to the Medieval period, c. 1250-1400. The fitting takes the form of a plano-convex sectioned rectangular bar, from the top of which projects a tapering rearward-facing curved hook. The rectangular portion of the object (retaining some traces of gilding) demonstrates two integrally cast attachment lugs projecting spaced at its upper and lower edges, at the top of which is a prominent transverse moulding-dividing it from the hooked section of the object. Preserved in fair condition with a patchy brownish green patina, it measures 33.65mm in length, 7.44mm wide at the midpoint of the rectangular element by 4.41mm thick, and weighs 8.11g.
A number of similar mounts have been recorded on the PAS database, see DEV-87E2A2 and SOM-AD2C56. Egan and Pritchard (1991: 155-6) illustrate a very similar example (no. 728). They suggest that this may be a strap end, the original find discovered in a late 13th to early 14th century context. It seems more likely it was attached vertically across a strap and used to hang an item such as keys or a purse.
