A complete cast lead alloy spindle whorl of the Medieval to Post Medieval period (AD1200-1600).
The spindle whorl is bi-conical in shape with a central perforation running through it. Both surfaces are decorated with irregularly spaced raised lines radiating from the central perforation. Some of the lines form triangular shapes whilst the rest are trapezoidal. The metal is fairly worn and corroded with a general light brown patina with darker brown patches suggesting either iron is present in the alloy or some was buried nearby the object.
Lead weights of this form were commonly used throughout the Medieval and Post-Medieval period and are therefore difficult to date accurately. Examples of spindle whorls have reportedly been found in contexts dated from the Roman through to the Post-Medieval period although the majority are typically dated broadly to the Medieval period c.1100-1600.
