A silver sovereign penny of Henry VII or VIII dating to the period AD 1485 - 1547. Uncertain coinage. King enthroned issue. Long cross over Royal shield reverse. Unclear initial mark.

The coin is very worn and has been pierced at 5 o'clock on the obverse.

Some pierced/modified coins can come within the remits of Treasure Act 1996, including all finds of pierced silver or gold coins up to AD 1180 and some thereafter depending upon the nature of the piercing. Pierced medieval and later silver coins are however fairly common single finds and many are also known from hoards. This suggests they would not have been removed from circulation and would have continued to function as a coin.

The cannot be guaranteed that the current example was permanently removed from circulating currency to adapt it as jewellery or convert it to some other form of object.

The coin has been pierced, indicating a secondary function which would normally indicate that it should be considered as potential Treasure (under Treasure Act 1996). However, coins dating after AD1180 with similar piercings are also known in hoards of currency, suggesting that such objects could re-enter circulation as coins. It therefore cannot be said with confidence whether this particular object was regarded as a coin or as another type of object at the time that the coin was deposited.
