Lead-alloy spindle whorl, dating from the medieval period (AD1200-1500). The whorl is made up of a central bi-conical body which is damaged but appears to be decorated with raised ring and dot motifs on both. The perforation has an internal diameter of 10.3mm.The surface of the whorl is damaged and is pale brown in colour with white powdery patches.
Diameter: 22.8mm; thickness: 9.2mm; weight: 16.2g
Notes:
Lead weights of this form were commonly used throughout the Medieval and Post-Medieval period and are therefore difficult to date accurately. Examples of spindle whorls have reportedly been found in contexts dated from the Roman through to the Post-Medieval period although the majority are typically dated broadly to the medieval period c.1100-1500.
