Cast copper-alloy swivel which was used as a strap fitting dating from the Medieval to the Post-medieval period. The swivel has two plain D-shaped loops with oval apertures and bevelled internal edges. The loops are joined by a single integral rivet, with a rounded domed head 5 mm in diameter, protruding 5 mm from a flat collar on one of the loops. There are similar objects recorded on the database with simple loops and neat attachments, such as in WMID-AF6A07 and SUR-AEDCA5 which are dated from the Post-medieval period, as opposed to the many other strap fittings such as NMS-8B44F7 and HAMP-8B1C1C which have detailed mouldings and are dated from the Medieval period. Such swivels were used on a range of strap fittings including animal leashes, hanging purses and belt fittings and carried on being used into the Post-medieval period. Another record WAW-2A2804 bases its dating to the Medieval period on the example below, which is incomplete and simpler in form.

Egan and Pritchard (2002) illustrate a simpler D-shaped component with a rivet on page 230, fig.145, no.1230, which is dated from the late 13th to the 14th century, but it is missing its pair so is hard to compare to this swivel.

Read (2016) illustrates a simpler D-shaped component with a hole in it for the rivet on page 67, no.485, which is dated from the 13th to the 17th century. Again incomplete and without any stylisitic decoration, it is difficult to date.
