A fragment of a copper-alloy scabbard chape dating from the late medieval to early post medieval period, about AD 1450 - 1600. The cast front has a plain concave back, angled sides and a moulded front. The lower part is shaped like a scallop shell with radiating moulded indented lines. At the base of the curve is a damaged projecting knop The upper part of the chape, and the backplate are missing. The break is patinated. It measures 18.1mm long, 26mm wide and 3.9mm thick. 3g.
Ward Perkins (1940) illustrates similar chapes (Plate LXXX) and this example is probably closest to his Type III (ibid p.285) with a similar scallop lower section and indented top. Standard Type IIIs have a trefoil piercing in the upper part. He dates them to the late 15th to 16th centurys (ibid p.286). Compare SWYOR-4805FB for a more complete example.
