Post Medieval copper alloy double looped buckle frame, dating to c.AD 1350 to 1650. The frame consists of two oval loops divided by a central bar. The loops are D-shaped and convex on the front and flat on the back. One of the loop is really worn and part of the outer edge is now missing. The strap bar is straight and sub-rectangular in cross section. It has a slight knops at one end. The bucke has no decoration. Traces of iron corrosion on the bar and both loops probably suggest an iron pin, now missing. The buckle is really worn and has a dark green patina with traces of white metal.

It measures 24.4 mm in length, 19.6 mm in width at the integral loop, 2.2 mm in thickness and weighs 2.21 g.

This style of buckle is quite common and numerous examples are documented on this database. A similar example is illustrated in Margeson (1993:30, no.164) from a 17th century context , although with an incised line for a pin rest in the centre of each loop, it is likely similar simple forms were in use by c.1350 (Egan and Pritchard 1991:22, 82-3, cf no.332).

Class: Cassels type 1.4A
