A sub-circular lead weight of 38.6mm diameter and 9.4mm thickness. The object weighs 88.62g (3.13oz). This artefact has a roughly 'D' shaped cross-section being flatter on the reverse and slightly domed on the decorated upper surface. The decorative surface is unclear but seems to consist of a cross, the four quarters between the arms being recessed below the surface of the arms and outer circular border. Close observation reveals that a possible crescent, or possibly a damaged pellet, is present within one of the recessed quarters. A pellet or possibly a line of three pellets is present in the quarter adjacent to the possible crescent. It is unclear whether the arms of the cross extend out to and merge into the external border or stop within the recessed field. The reverse surface is undecorated and the presence of concentric circles is most probably the result of manufacture, possibly the levelling and smoothing off of the lead during casting in an open mould. The edge of the reverse surface is irregularly thickened. Again, this is probably the result of production rather than by design.

See Biggs, N. , 1992 English Weights: An illustrated survey White House Publications pp.40-41 and Biggs, N., 1995 Bullion Weights: An Outline Catalogue Llanfyllin: White House Publications pp.10-13.

Although lead weights can be extremely difficult to date unless excavated from undisturbed archaeological deposits, Biggs discusses the possibility of the decorated cross type dating from the c.AD1100s onwards.
