Cut silver hammered halfpenny, Scottish, Alexander III (1249-1286), first coinage, long cross and stars, type IIIb (Spink S5043) dating to 1250-1280. Moneyer: Simond. Mint: Forfar. Ref: Spink 2015, pg 17.
Obverse: crowned portrait, left with sceptre, ALE[...]REX. Reverse: voided long cross with stars in quarters, SIM/[...]/FOR .
Notes:
Only two reverse dies are known for Simond at Forfar. it is possible this example reads SIM/[OH/O:OH]/FOR as this is the only known published reverse die combined with type IIIb at the Forfar mint. The obverse die could also be the same obverse die used by the moneyer Wilam at Forfar as this die also as an unbarred A in ALEXANDER.
