Medieval (late 13th to 14th century) buckle: The copper alloy buckle frame is a double looped oval in plan. The loops are decorated with three transverse grooves. The reverse is undecorated. The strap bar is a rounded trapezoid in section and has the trace of an iron pin.
The buckle surface has a dark-green abraded patina.
The buckle measures 19.49mm in length, 13.56mm wide and weighs 0.97g.
Egan and Pritchard (2002) date a similar shaped buckle, No. 350, to the late 13th to 14th century. Due to the size of the frame Egan and Pritchard (2002) comment that they were probably produced for a specialised function, but what this function is, is unknown.
