Two lead styli of probable Medieval or Post-Medieval date. Both are circular in section and cylindrical in form with a tapering point at one end with the other ends worn and blunt which may have originally expanded into a wedge-shape, used to erase what had been written with the point. The first stylus is 4.3 mm in length, 7.5 mm in diameter and 19.85 g in weight; the second is 62.5 mm in length, 10.5 mm in diameter and 22.6 g in weight. The long, tapered end of the longer stylus is deeply pitted and the surfaces of both styli are coated with an off-white layer of lead oxide. Egan (1998) illustrates two similar lead styli on p.271, fig.209, nos.892-893 from excavated contexts which are dated from between the mid-12th and mid-14th centuries. However, this type of stylus would probably have been used for marking slate and was in use extensively during the Medieval to Post Medieval periods so without contextual evidence they are difficult to date accurately. Other examples recorded on the database include LVPL-9EA82E from Cheshire West, YORYM-5B2BD5 from Hambleton, North Yorkshire, WMID-75E14F from Ashow, Warwickshire and WAW-76B4E3 from Stratford-upon-Avon, West Midlands, which are all dated from the Medieval to the Post-medieval period.

Notes:

The measurements below are for the larger of the two styli.
