A worn copper-alloy coin weight for the gold angel of James I (1603-1625), Third coinage (1619-1625). Almost square in plan, the sides are 12.8 by 13.5 mm, 3.5 mm in thickness and weighing 3.7 g or 57.1 grains. The weight is bifacially stamped, the obverse depicting St. Michael, with right leg bent and left leg straight, spearing a dragon to the right, within a circle of pellets. The reverse is inscribed X.s (for 10 shillings), surmounted by a crown with a central cross and two fleurs on each side, also within a circle of pellets. Withers & Withers (1995) remark that there are many varieties of coin weight for the gold angel from the 16th and 17th centuries on p.21, although on p.14, fig.i, they illustrate an example of a coin weight for the angel of James I, Third coinage, of very similar design, which weighs 4.2 g. For this third coinage, James I had reduced the angel in weight to 65.5 grains, and revalued it to 10 shillings. Considering that most of the surface of this coin weight is missing, it would have originally been heavier and similar to the identified coin weight.
