An incomplete cast Early-Medieval copper-alloy single loop ovoid buckle circa sixth century date.
Description: The frame is roughly ovoid with a narrowed offset strap-bar. It is missing its pin. The hoop is D shape in section and the buckle without decoration. The frame is circular in cross-section. The buckle is an off grey colour with some mottled green patination. Parts of the frame have become flakey.
Measurements: Width: 33.5 mm, length 19.5mm, Thickness: 5.2mm and Weight: 13.28g.
Discussion: These buckles fits Marzinzik's (2003) Type I.5 and Hines and Bayliss (2013) Type BU2-d, which both date them broadly to the mid/late fifth to sixth centuries. The type is fairly common across early medieval northern Europe and is particularly well-represented in female Kentish burials (Marzinzik 2003, 21; Hines and Bayliss 2013, 138, 332, Table 6.13).
