A near complete cast copper-alloy Anglo-Scandinavian Stirrup Strap Mount belonging to Williams (1997) Class A, Type 1.

Description: The mount is of flat and sub-pentagonal in plan, with all edges barring the base are curved giving it a bell-shaped appearance. At the apex is a projecting lobe with a fixing hole aligned to it but in the main body of the mount. Along the outside edges are four additional projecting lobes aligned parallel to each other, one pair at the top and one pair lower. The upper surface of the mount an incised decorative motif, although the design is unclear due to wear. The most common design on such mounts is a symmetrical downwards facing beasts. From the remaining incised curved elements on the middle of the mount appear to indicate an asymmetrical design. There does appear to be an incised border which continues onto the apex lobe. The upper fixing hole is flanked by paired incised lines perhaps elements from the primary design.

The reverse of the mount appears to be undecorated. At the lower edge a straight probably right-angled flange projects rearwards, of uncertain type Just above the flange are two rivet holes, both have the remains of corroded rivets in situ. This mount is largely reddish brown and has some mottled light green patination.

Measurements: Width (maximum): 44.5 mm Height: 51.0 mm and Weight: 39.2 g.

Discussion: The group to which this stirrup strap mount belongs is notable for its individuality, each piece being independently engraved. Class A, Type 1 stirrup-strap mounts are flat, cast, broadly pentagonal in shape, and normally have three rivet holes. A similar heavily rounded Class A Type 1 mount was reported to the PAS (KENT-434223) from Eastling, Kent. The majority of stirrup-strap mounts date from the 11th century (Williams 1996. 2) with a possible 'terminus post quem' around 1140 (Lewis 2007, 184.
