A cast lead alloy trade weight dating from the Medieval period, about AD 1300 - 1500. It is shield shaped and has a raised shield shaped area on the front face. The central design is of a crown over a fleur in relief. The weight has a mass of 213gm (7 1/2oz) so was probably intended as an 8oz weight. It has, however suffered some damage to the pointed base and the upper corners. The weight is 52.7mm long, 41.5mm wide and 15.0mm thick. It has a patchy cream and grey patina.
Similar weights are discussed and illustrated in Biggs and Withers, 2000, Lead Weights: The David Rogers Collection, pages 34 - 40, and see page 302 of The Medieval Household. Compare also SWYOR-308CC.
