COIN WEIGHT

Unique ID: YORYM-93BF04

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A copper alloy coin weight cast in the shape of a flat disc, one face decorated with 3 concentric circles around the border. This face was then marked with punches, with a central dot, a crown above and a fleur de lys below (see Withers 1993 p12 no.90). The reverse is blank. These crown and lys weights were introduced in 1421 and continued in use until the later 15th century (at least 1464 and maybe later). This one was for weighing noble coins from its size, and probably issued under Henry VI as his first reign (1422-61) coincides almost completely with the use of these coins and weights (1421-64).
