An incomplete copper alloy dagger chape of late Medieval to early Post-Medieval date.
Description: Only one half of the chape remains. It has semi-circular cross-section and roughly triangular in plan, tapering downwards from a flared opening end (creating a 'Flying V' effect) to a rounded point with knopped terminal at the other. There are two transverse raised ridges decorating the front surface of the chape. The reverse of the chape fragment is concave with a bevelled edge to allow attachment to the other half of the object sandwiching the scabbard between it. The edges are fairly worn and one of the 'flying V' point is snapped off. There is some obvious filling marks on the surfaces indicative of finishing. The entire object is mostly a dark green colour on the upper surface and bright green on the inner side where the lack of finishing has led to a different colouring.
Measurements: 56.72mm long, 28.38mm wide, 6.34mm thick and 9.16g in weight.
Discussion: Similar examples can be seen on the database @: KENT-8CD3AD, BERK-1136DA and DUR-917B22 which are dated to c. AD 1450 to 1600.
