MOUNT

Unique ID: WMID-AB617F

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete copper alloy bar mount dating to the Medieval period (c. AD 1230-60). The mount is trefoil shaped at one end with the terminal being flattened and waisted. It then extends into the bar, which is D-shaped in section. At the opposite end the mount flattens out again to form a circular terminal with a long, sub-triangular projection at its terminus. Both the trefoil and circular terminals have rivets holes at their centre, through no rivets remain. The object has a dark brown patina and has been bent in antiquity into a slight U-shape.

Comparable examples can be found in Read (2001: 23) see figures 12 and 13 for nos 166-67; and Egan (1998: 73) see figure 50 no. 147. However, the recorder has yet to find an example with mis-matched terminals.

The overall dimensions are as follows: 76.6mm in length, 13.52mm in width, 3.54mm in thickness and 9.4g in weight.

Class: Bar mount
