Medieval lead alloy seal matrix. The matrix is circular, 2.7mm thick and 24.8mm in diameter. There is a flattened suspension loop at the rear. The die face depicts an eight armed Maltese cross with central pellet, surrounded by a beaded border and a legend in Lombardic lettering, the last portion of which is difficult to read.
This legend could be read: +S' WILLELMI D PV(TT)E and may be a personal seal (SIGILLVM) relating to the de la Putte family who were landowners in Hampshire, albeit some distance from the findspot, in the area of Winchester (Bramdean) and who granted estates to the Priory at Selbourne during the 13th century.
