A square two sided coin weight, likely for a French half ecu, dating to the period AD 1422 - 1545. One face depicts a beaded circle inside which is a crowned shield with three lis is inside. The other face is heavily worn but likely had a numeral inside a beaded circular border. There appears to be a letter 'A' visible inside the beaded border, close to the edge.

Dimensions: weight: 1.2g, width: 13.1mm, length: 13.5mm, thickness: 1.2mm

These weights were used to weight the French ecu and half ecu, issued with minor weight variation between the reigns of Charles VII ( 1422-61) and Louis XI (1436- 1475). By 1525, the ecu was used in England and was equivalent to four shillings. Double sided weights like this example were made in Britain. See Withers, P and BR, 1995: 39 for more details.
