An incomplete cast copper-alloy composite strap end dating to the Medieval period, c. 1250-1400. Only the internal forked spacer survives, the side plates and rivets missing in old damage. One arm of the spacer is broken away and its remainder twisted outwards, the object being broadly 'U' shaped in plan view with an acorn-shaped terminal demonstrating two transverse mouldings. Preserved in fair condition with an even greenish patina, it measures 48.43mm in length from the tip of the surviving arm to the terminal, 17.49mm wide at the junction of the arms above the terminal, and 4.72mm thick at the midpoint of the terminal. It weighs 5.45g.
Similar forked-spacers are recorded on the PAS database as IOW-AC9ED8, IOW-455D71, IOW-2108B7 and IOW-1931F6. See also examples published by Egan and Pritchard (1991), p. 144, nos. 680-681.
