A complete lead alloy biconical decorated spindle whorl of probable Medieval date (AD 1200 to AD 1450).

Description: The spindle whorl is sub-circular in plan and lentoid in section. Both the upper and lower faces have been decorated an inscription cast in relief. Each of the spindle whorl's faces are divided into four quarters by raised pairs of lines. The legend on both faces appears to include the same letters although not necessarily spaced into each quarters the same. One side (left on the image) seems to read 'CA/L/E/I' while the other (on the right) seems to read 'A/L/EIC'. (image oriented with the LE on the left image at their correct angles). Its seems probable that it was intending to write the name Alice, which was particularly popular during the period it is suggested this spindle whorl dates to. The spindle whore is patinated an off white typical of aged lead.

Measurements: 31.11mm in diameter, 9.31mm thick and 37.28g in weight.

Discussion: Several spindle whorls with inscriptions are known from the Early-Medieval period to the Medieval period. The lettering and the division of this example would suggest a 13th - 15th century date. A similarly divided spindle whorl is recorded on the PAS (NLM-F5D554) amongst a small number of known inscribed examples.
