An incomplete early medieval (Anglo-Scandinavian) copper alloy stirrup strap mount, dating to c.1070-1140. The mount is Williams Class A, Type 10c. The mount is sub triangular in shape, with the longer sides arching out slightly. The front of the mount is decoration with moulded high relief decoration, depicting an animal viewed from above, with the head at the narrowed end, with a leg either side and the paw curved round. The head of the creature has a rounded snout, and two circular hollows for eyes. Above the snout is a circular perforation for attachment. Above this the mount terminates in a rounded collared point, there are two triangular shaped projections above this, but these are worn. The body of the creature is formed of intricate interlacing strands. At the wider edge of the mount are two circular perforations. Below each of these are two rounded triangular projections. On the reverse the mount is concave, with no decoration. The mount has a light green patina, and the creature is a red brown colour. It measures 57.2mm in length, 35.4mm in width, and 6.6mm in maximum thickness. It weighs 35.89g.
