Unique ID: PUBLIC-1B85D5

Object type certainty: Certain

Incomplete cast copper alloy double-looped oval buckle frame with moulded decoration on the surviving outer edge and at either end of the strap bar. The frame has a bevelled inner edge and a flat back so that it is D-shaped in section. At the outside edge of the frame there is a moulded scallop shell with five oblique grooves but no central line which would have been used as a pin rest. The strap bar is narrowed and slightly recessed from the upper surface of the frame and has a moulded rosette with a central pellet at either end. There are traces of black lacquer on the mouldings which would have protected the copper alloy underneath. Two thirds of one loop and the pin are now missing, but there is a layer of iron oxide around the bar which suggests that the pin was made of iron.

Dimensions: length 19.8 mm, width 20.2 mm, thickness 2.5 mm, weight 1.45 g.

Whitehead (1996) illustrates a buckle frame with similar mouldings on page 66, no.410, which is dated from c.1550-1650.
