STAMP

Unique ID: NARC-06ABA2

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete cast lead or lead alloy stamp of late Post-Medieval to Modern date (AD 1750-1900) The object is possibly a hand-held stamp with a movable aspect. The object is T-shaped with individual rectangular letter stamps within central recess. The right hand outer edge has a circular perforation through which is a banded iron screw with circular terminating knop. This mechanism would facilitated the letters within the stamp to be exchanged. The back of the object is flat with a projecting spur which is sub-rectangular with an inward tapering end. Both left and right hand edges are rounded.

The retained lettering reads: W ҉ T/D[..] (eight petaled flower between two initials)

The metal is a dark grey in colour with a predominantly smooth patina
