Medieval cast copper alloy heraldic harness pendant. The pendant is shield shaped with a straight top and convex sides which meet at a point at the bottom. From the middle of the top edge projects a transverse suspension loop the back of the loop is missing from an old, worn, break. On the front is moulded design of six lions divided into groups of three by a triple diagonal line, the outer lines and lions containing traces of gilding and probably with traces of blue enamel in the field. This design is blazoned: azure a bend argent, cotised or, between six lions rampant or. Length: 38.8mm; width: 25.6mm; thickness: 4.3mm; weight: 10.77g.
Harness pendants are generally dated from the twelfth to the fourteenth century, with enamelled and heraldic types predominating in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries (Griffiths, 1995). These are the arms of the De Bohun family, Earls of Hereford and Essex and were bourne by several members of the family in turn. They were important landowners and many harness pendants with their arms have been recorded on this database from across the country, from Northumberland to Cornwall.
