A copper alloy medieval seal matrix, dating from1200-1400 AD. The seal face is round in shape, with the die depicting a letter, either d or p. The letter is surrounded by branches, and around this is a circular solid border. Part of the edge of the die is worn and broken.
The seal extends up into the handle which is a hexagonal shape. The attachment loop is lozenge shaped, with two raised oval collars below, the lower one is in higher relief to the others.
The seal matrix has a dark green patina, and measures 24.2mm in height, 15.2mm in maximum width across the seal face, and weighs 6.53g.
A number of similar seals have been recorded on the database, including DOR-60038A, HAMP-6E7C3E and SF-FFC757.
Notes:
Harvey and McGuiness (1996:93) comment 'An initial with crown above, branches at the side, was a design that became increasingly common in the fifteenth century'. Finger-rings are also known with similar designs and these appear to date from the 15th century.
