BOOK FITTING

Unique ID: SF-AD95E2

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete copper-alloy Medieval book clasp with integral forked spacer, dating to the period AD 1300-1450. It consists of a tapering integral forked spacer ending with a pierced oval plano-convex element. The latter has a pierced terminal set at right angle; the terminal is incomplete and is probably moulded in a form of a stylised animal head. Both faces of the forked spacer bear traces of soldering.

Cf Egan-Pritchard (1991, p. 154, no. 723). See parallel on PAS database: LON-1EFE7D.

The clasp would have been attached to a strap fixed to one cover of the book, and fitted over a peg mounted on the opposite cover (Egan, 1998, fig. 214). It is thought that the pierced terminal may have held a cord to help in removing the clasp from the peg (Egan, 1998, p. 278).
