Roman brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth 2011, Part 3, Group 4c, Plate 46, AD c. 50-200). The copper alloy brooch has semi-cylindrical wings with perforated wing caps. The wings are undecorated. The axis bar, spring and pin are missing. At the centre of the upper edge of the wings/bow head there is an integral hook. The bowhead is hump-like in profile with a moulding either side, and is decorated with an inverted triangular low-relief area which tapers down the bow. Either side of this decoration, on the upper portion of the bow there is an inlaid silver omega-like motif which is on its side. The bow tapers and is semi-circular and terminates with a bulbous foot. There is a solid catchplate on the reverse.

The surface of the brooch has a dark green patina.

It measures 64.62mm in length, 22.66mm in width, and weighs 19.8g.

The brooch is a Polden Hill type, Bayley and Butcher (2004:160) comment that the distribution of Polden Hill brooches are concentrated in the West Midlands. Mackreth classifies this type as Group 4c dating to mid 1st to 2nd century.
