CHAFING DISH

Unique ID: YORYM-899B48

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete copper-alloy attachment lug from a chafing dish handle of medieval to Post-Medieval date, c.AD 1400 - 1600.

The lug is C-shaped with a flaring rectangular element from which a circular sectioned shaft projects. This shaft would have passed through the wall of the vessel to allow the handle to hang freely.

File marks are present over the surfaces of the object.

The metal has a mid-green patina and is in fair condition. The object is 30.3mm long, 13.4mm wide, 8.6mm thick and weighs 162g.

Along with a heart-shaped frame, this lug would have formed the handle of a chafing dish; a vessel that would have been filled with smouldering charcoal and used to keep food warm.

Similar lugs have been recorded as YORYM-74D36C, LIN-0CF4AF and YORYM-7D412B. A complete chafing dish handle of this form is: LANCUM-8C779B which states "Margeson (1983) notes that similar forms of handle are found on both 15th/16th century chafing dishes and cupboard doors. Illustrated in Norwich Households is a similar example (no 491) which is dated to the Late medieval and Early Post Medieval period. Bailey (2000:p.59) also illustrates similar examples (Fig.8) dating to the 15th to 18th centuries. He also illustrates an example of a complete chafing dish (Type A) with heart shaped attachment handles".
