WEIGHT

Unique ID: LANCUM-7595A8

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Lead weight formed from folded sheet of uncertain date within the period c. 43 - 1700 AD. The object is broadly rectangular in plan but of irregular shape. It has been made by folding the two ends of a long rectangular lead sheet in until they overlap on one side and meet on the other side. The object has a cream-coloured patina. The fold is now filled with organic detriment. The object is 16.75mm in length, 14.47mm in width and 10.35mm at maximum thickness. It weighs 10g.

There are a number of similar examples of objects made from folded lead sheets on the database. These have been identified variously as weights, or more specifically net sinkers (eg, NLM-E1280C, NLM-A58C8A, YORYM-67A3F5). See also NLM-6340AE. Some have even been identified as Roman curse tablets (eg, LANCUM-C2A2F4), although this is not compelling and cannot be determined for certain without unrolling the object. As similar examples have been excavated from sites ranging from the Iron Age to the medieval period, the date range assigned to this object must remain imprecise.
