An incomplete, copper alloy Roman brooch of the trumpet variety dating from AD 75 - 175. The remaining portion consists of the bow and the head. The foot has broken away and is missing. In the centre of the bow is an acanthus moulding, now worn, between two sets of transverse grooves, three below the bow and one above. Down each side of the bow is a single, lateral groove. The remains of a cast copper alloy hinged pin remain in place behind the head and the remains of the catchplate are below the lower section of the bow. The pin is supported on an axis bar in a tubular housing. The brooch has a rough, light green patina. It is 39.1mm long, 12.3mm wide and 21.1mm thick. It weighs 7.56gm.
A similar brooch is illustrated in Hattat, 2000, A Visual Catalogue of Richard Hattat's Ancient Brooches, figure 187, number 960.
