The object is circular with a flat bottom face and convex, decorative upper face. Raised lines extend from a central dome to the outer edge of the upper face; interspersed between these are raised circles. The sections between the transverse lines are also slightly domed. The object has a cream-coloured patina. A large section of the central dome on the upper face is chipped. Otherwise the object survives in good condition. The object is 25.88mm in diameter, 6.59mm in thickness and weighs 19g.
The overall form of this object suggests it was used either as a gaming piece or weight. The style of decoration in particular is reminiscent of the geometric designs commonly found on medieval lead spindle whorls. However, as no exact parallel has yet been found, the date range assigned to this object must be imprecise. Certainly, similar objects recorded on the database as gaming pieces or weights have been dated to the Roman period (NLM-949CA9, LVPL-4808B1, SWYOR-22CB72) and the early medieval period (NLM-FC459B), as well as the medieval period (YORYM-F37EA5).2018-07-23 16:11:492018-07-25 14:44:50422018-06-241Probably112129PAS5B55F03500140594LANCUMLead11094CompleteGoodROMANROx41218p0gjgrs69wsMEDIEVALMDx14221p0gjgrsxwzxMetal detectorCircaCirca91043151564961492541431SD5770SD5770SD57SE54.12404964-2.659429951011021193LANCUM5F0354.jpg1795211Lead gaming pieceThe Portable Antiquities Scheme4images/lydiaprosser/North WestCultivated landEuropean RegionCountyLancashireDistrictLancasterCivil Parish54.1169-2.67474GressinghamReturned to finder95650
