An incomplete copper alloy buckle, probably a shoe buckle of post-Medieval date, about AD 1660 - 1720. The frame is slightly curved and sub-rectangular in plan, with concave sides and rounded corners. The long sides of the frame are moulded in the shape of shallow crescents, each with two transverse ridges on the outer side. The short edges each have a central notch between small, moulded knops. The upper side of the buckle is bevelled, the underside is flat. The pin bar and pin ae missing. The buckle is tinned or has a white metal coating, resulting in a smooth, light grey patina. It is 31.9mm long, 20.5mm wide and 5.4mm tick. It weighs 7.11gm.
A similar buckle is illustrated in Griffiths, Philpott and Egan, 2007, Meols: The Archaeology of the North Wirral Coast, page 218, number 3049. An identical buckle is also illustrated in Whitehead, 2003, Buckles 1250 -1800, page 99, number 619.
