A lead alloy pilgrim's ampulla of Medieval date, about AD 1350 - 1530. It has a shield motif on one face, and a probable crown. The shield has cross hatching at the pointed base, a horizontal stripe of diagonal raised lines above that, another stripe but with possible crosses on it above that, and a fourth stripe at the top with an unclear design. The ampulla has a circular body, and a flaring neck, crimped shut. Damage to the neck has resulted in it being bent double over the crown side of the body.
The ampulla is 30.7mm long, 32.9mm wide and 11mm thick. 29.3g.

Notes:
Ampulla were either worn around the neck or often donated to the neighbourhood to be hung in the parish church. They come into use in the late twelfth century and feature as secondary relics in virtually every thirteenth century parish church. With the introduction of pilgrim badges in the fourteenth century, they become more stereotyped.
