STIRRUP

Unique ID: DEV-097301

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A late Early Medieval to early Medieval copper alloy stirrup terminal, probably dating to c. AD 1000-1100. The object is now highly abraded, but is sub-rectangular in plan and sub-triangular in cross section, tapering into a sub-circular sectioned debased urnes-style crested animal head which curls around to meet the main body of the terminal and form a circular aperture. The interior (sub-triangular) face of the terminal is concave, and retains a significant amount of iron corrosion, although the outer edges (and possible face) have been lost.

Dimensions: height 22.4mm; width 21.5mm; thickness 12.1mm; weight 11.98g.

The object can be compared to more complete examples on this database (e.g. SF-D8BEE1) and published by Williams (1997: 2, fig. 3). This type of terminal is noted as having a distribution concentrated in East Anglia and Lincolnshire, making this find notable. It is also the first stirrup terminal recorded on the PAS from Devon.
