BOW BROOCH

Unique ID: SF-E5228E

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete cast copper-alloy bow brooch of Colchester Derivative type, dating to c. AD 43-100. Only the pin and part of the head is missing, otherwise the object is preserved intact. It demonstrates a semi-circular sectioned winged head (the wings being plain and undecorated), from the rear of which at its midpoint projects a pierced double lug. Part of the spring still remains threaded through this, with one of the wings also mostly missing in an old break. The bow is 'D' shaped in section and plain, tapering towards a plain foot- from the rear of which the triangular catchplate projects. The latter demonstrates a rolled back edge (to accomodate the original pin) and a decorative triangular internal cut-out section at its midpoint. Preserved in good condition with an even green patina, it measures 52.23mm in length, 14.95mm in width at its head, and 2.53mm thick at the midpoint of the bow. It weighs 5.1g.
