An incomplete cast copper-alloy and enamel brooch dating to the Roman period, c. 80-250 AD. It is circular in plan, with a double-lugged pin mechanism (with co-incident axis bar and wound spring) and catchplate projecting from its reverse face. The catchplate is folded at its base in order to accomodate the pin, which is now missing in old damage. Otherwise, the brooch is preserved complete. The upper surface is ornately decorated, demonstrating a recessed central circular panel surrounded by a 'sunburst' motif with thirteen points and thirteeen internal raised pellets. The 'sunburst' itself has been inlaid with red enamel, while the surrounding border outside this which extends to the very edges of the brooch has been differentially applies with that of a dark blue colour. Preserved in good condition with an even green patina, it measures c. 22.71mm in length along the axis of the pin, 22.24mm wide at its midpoint, 5.41mm thick at the pin lugs, and weighs 3.8g. Similar disc brooches with an enamelled star motif are recorded by Hattatt from Colchester (Hattatt 1985, no. 505, p 140), Ipswich (Hattatt, 1982, no. 119, p 138) and an unprovenanced example (Hattatt, 1987, no. 1035, p 169). He sees the brooches as a native British type. Similar examples have also been recorded on the PAS database, see records NMGW-38FF3A, BERK-5280E8 and LEIC-DEBCD6.
