Roman copper alloy bow brooch, 41mm long, 36mm wide and 16mm thick with a weight of 21.67grams.
The brooch has circular cross sectioned solid wings which have an unusual rectangular cut away section, centrally placed to expose the spring, of which 12 coils are visible. The front of the wings have a double stepped edge, the inner one also 'beaded', behind which is a row of sub spherical knops. The bow is D shaped in cross section and is highly decorated. This begins with a recessed 'beaded' border/collar around its circumference just below where it joins the wings. The top of the bow has a semi-spherical projection, centrally placed and below this there are three rows of 'beading' running to the brooches stepped foot. These are flanked by three semi-spherical projections running down each side. The catchplate takes up half the length of the bow and is sub rectangular in form with a long elongated upper edge. The return on the catchplate is decorated with a series of incised chevrons, running down its length. The brooch has decorative features similar to Headstud, Polden hill and Sawtooth brooches with no obvious parallels.
